DESTINATION 02 — WIDE OPEN SPACES
Wild Kazakhstan
The ninth-largest country on earth, and almost nobody in it. Steppe that runs to the curvature of the planet, canyons with no fence and no queue, and night skies that will recalibrate what you think a star is.
The scale of it
Kazakhstan is bigger than all of Western Europe, and most of it is empty in a way that is almost impossible to feel anywhere else on the continent. You drive for three hours and see two cars. The steppe is not scenery — it is a presence. Our routes here are built around distance: long drives that earn their stops, ger camps under black-out skies, and canyons you will have to yourself.
What we build around it
Charyn Canyon — the "Valley of Castles" — walked at dawn before any other footprint arrives. Kolsai Lakes on horseback or on foot, birch and spruce stacked up the valley walls. The altai-emel national park for the Singing Dunes, which moan when the wind is right. And if you come in deep winter, the frozen lakes and ice caves of the east — a different country wearing the same map.
MOMENTS YOU SHOULD EXPECT
- ✦Dawn in the Valley of Castles — nobody else for sixty kilometres
- ✦The Singing Dunes humming under your feet
- ✦A night in a yurt camp where the Milky Way throws shadows
- ✦Kolsai Lake, still as glass, an hour before sunset
